The Story

In 1988, at the behest of the Rebbe o"bm, Rabbi Dovid and Rebbetzin Chanie Greene arrived in Rochester and opened Chabad's doors.

From a modest home near Mayo Clinic, they welcomed patients, caregivers, and locals with Shabbat meals, kosher food, and a warm Jewish presence. The "Bais Chaya Moussia Hospitality Center" became both their family residence and the beating heart of Jewish life in Southern Minnesota.

In 2017, Rabbi Shloime and Chana Greene joined the team, growing youth programming, establishing Gan Rochester Preschool and strengthening the Moussia Hospitality Network with a vital presence around the Mayo Clinic, developing programs for patient advocacy, referrals, and resources.

Chabad of Southern Minnesota and Mayo Clinic area is family, community, and the home away from home for every Jew who passes through the Mayo Clinic area whether for a week, a year, or a lifetime.

Recently, a patient arrived in Rochester for treatment at the Mayo Clinic.

Exhausted. Hungry. Alone.

They came to Chabad hoping for a warm meal and a place to pray. But the entryway has no handicap access, so they had to wait outside.

This is not an edge case. It's every week.

Patients seeking comfort sometimes can't even make it through the door.

Meals for hundreds are prepared in a small kitchen unequipped for the quantities.

A growing Jewish community gathers in cramped and aging spaces never meant for the needs of today.

Prayer, learning, hospitality, and community life all compete for room under one small roof.

Gan Rochester Preschool began in 2021 with just two children. Today, it's bursting with life in an off-site facility leased in 2025 to keep up with demand.
